Mechanism of psoriasis occurrence is not completely clear, but majority of scientists believe that psoriasis is the result of rapid cell division. Healthy skin cells mature in 28–30 days and are peeled from the skin surface. In this case, cells need only three to four days to mature, thus creating red patches on the skin. The disease is often genetically determined and can occur at any period in life. Psoriasis is triggered by emotional stress, virus or bacterial infection and medications. Alcohol and cigarettes may worsen the entire condition. The disease is characterized by thickened, red skin covered in thick white scales that usually do not itch. It can even cause the occurrence of small pits on the nails. Psoriasis usually occurs at scalp skin and exposed sides of the limbs. It does not affect hair follicle and does not cause hair loss.
